Mashhad, a holy city in the north east of Iran. Itʼs name literally means " place of martyrdom ". the city is blessed and notably known as the resting place of Imam Reza, the 8th Shia imam. Every year, millions of people come from near and far to go on a pilgrimage to Imam Reza shrine.
At first of your trip, I am definitely recommended to go to Imam Reza shrine and choose your hotel near this holy shrine because you have a good view of worshipers special at night.
The Imam Reza shrine complex, known as the Haram-e Razavi, dominate as the city center with seven massive courtyard and total area of nearly 600000 square meters, by some measures it is the largest mosque in the world. One thing to note is that you must use a Chador ( Iranian Hijab ) before entering the shrine.
Now itʼs time to take a look to Bazaar Reza.
Bazaar Reza is one of the oldest shopping center in Mashhad on the east side of holy shrine. Bazaar Reza is built in two separate floors and two corridors with about 1711 business units doing their business. You are faced with a wide range of goods such as prayer rug, turquoise rings, saffron, peas and raisins, spices and so on. Bazaar Reza is open from 9am to 22pm and itʼs closed on Friday mornings.
After this religious and traditional site, you need some recreational place to enjoy your time. As a result I suggested you to go to Koh Sangi. Koh Sangi is one of the oldest and most memorable sights of Mashhad that it is so called due to two rocky mountain overlooking the city.
For your lunch or dinner my suggestion is Torghabeh or Shandiz. Itʼs better to go Shandiz village for serving your lunch and Torghabeh village for serving your dinner.
Both these beautiful place are near Mashhad, you can reach there about 30-40minutes, and have a temperate climate, vast gardens and spectacular natural landscapes. The famous food of these villages is 6-pieces grilled lamb called Shishlik which is very delicious.
Near Torghabeh, there is another town called Tous, the distance from Torghabeh to Tous is just about 40km. in fact you can visit Ferdowsi Tomb here. First you should know a little bit about Ferdowsi.
Ferdowsi was a Persian poet and the author of Shahnameh ( the Persian book of kings ), which is the worldsʼ longest epic poem. Ferdowsi is celebrated as the most influential figure in Persian literature and one of the greatest in the history of literature. So you can visit his tomb and museum too.
At the end, I want to tell you if you are interested in buying carpet, don’t miss the time. In Mashhad Bazaar or in carpet museum you can find hand-woven carpets. The Carpet manufacturing in Mashhad is expensive and mostly large carpets with medallions are made, which are also sold under the name Meshed. The quality changes and the wool from Khorasan is recognized by itʼs softness.
